Extra light weight top whorl drop spindle in PNG figured Rosewood and Bamboo

This item made by Jory Freyee and Malcolm Fielding, designed by Jory Freyee, in the workshops of The Spindleshop, Queensland, Australia.  Photos show a similar one.

The spindle shaft of this heirloom quality item is made in bamboo, giving resilience, strength and extra light weight. The whorl is made from a lovely piece of ripple figured Papua New Guinea rosewood with two delicate dymondwood trim inlays in the the top of the whorl. The spindle has a handmade stainless steel transverse hook terminal, that has been fine tuned for accurate centreing of the thread. The whorl has a carefully shaped notch on the edge, that locates the thread to the correct position in the hook and gives a secure hold. Simply place the fibrein the notch and lead the thread into the hook (without winding around the centre of the spindle or hook - as shown in the photos. It is very quick and easy to re-locate the thread for the next spin.

This spindle suits extra light to light weight spinning.

The spindle is polished with a high shine French polish and a final gloss of carnauba wax adds durability.

This spindle design has fast spin and my trademark perfect balance, having been tested on a balance jig and has nickel silver weighting inserted in the underneath edge of the whorl. Dimensions - whorl diameter approx 65 mm, (2.5 in), spindle length overall including hook - 265 mm, (10.5 in), weight about 15  grams (0.53 oz).

All my spindles are tested before despatch and drop spindles come with a free sample of Corriedale roving from Tasmania. This item is in stock, we have several items made to this pattern.
