Tibetan "pu-yok" style supported spindle, long shaft medium light weight in Lace Sheoak and Dymondwood, titanium tip

This lovely Tibetan style supported spindle design will be a delight for the spinner who loves a supported spindle. It is medium light weight (29 grams - around 1.03 oz ) and 300 mm or 12 in long. The photos show the one you will receive, and this item is in stock.

The design is based on a shape still used by Tibetan nomads known as a pu-yok. It is long and slender with a largish whorl, which the shaft has a very slender area for flicking at the spinning tip.

The shaft of this heirloom quality item is made in Dymondwood for durability, stability and long life. The tip is made from a titanium insert for extreme durability. The point is carefully shaped to be slightly rounded over to avoid damage and scratching, and to ensure really smooth spins at all angles.

The low-set whorl is turned from an attractive piece of lace figure Sheoak from Western Australia, with prominent patterning showing on the whorl. The whorl is dished in the centre on the upper and lower sides giving this design a little extra rim weighting and a very long, medium to fast speed spin characteristic.  The balance is tuned and is perfected by insertion of silver  pin weighting in the rim of the whorl as needed. The spindle has been tested both for static and dynamic balance.

The top point is a slender taper to a narrow point to allow the yarn to slip the tip  easily. The bottom point is well defined and designed for an effortless long spin. A support bowl is needed for using this type of spindle. I also offer support bowls on this website and can make to order if there are none in stock.

The spindle is polished with a high shine French polish and a final gloss of carnauba wax adds durability.

This spindle style has a remarkably long spin and excellent balance. The spindle operates at a medium speed and is easy to flick. The large whorl means that a large cop of fibre can be built on this design.
