Titanium tip midi Pu Yok supported spindle, midi size in pink Blackheart Sassafras and Dymondwood, extra light weight This lovely Tibetan style supported spindle design will be a delight for the spinner who loves a supported spindle. This heirloom quality tool is made for a lifetime of use. The photos on this listing show an item similar to the one you will receive, made from the same block of timber. The design is based on small version of a shape still used by Tibetan nomads known as a pu-yok. It is characterised by the relatively thin delicately curved whorl. The spindle shaft is made from Dymondwood with the body of the whorl being made of a striking piece of pink shaded Sassafras from Tasmania. These pieces do not include black veining of some of this timber, but instead have lovely subtle pinkish shading. The whorl is stabilised with a special CA (cyanoacrylate) vacuum immersion treatment. The support tip of the spindle is made from a titanium insert which has been shaped to a narrow and slightly rounded point. This will give extra smooth spinning and last many years. Titanium is one of the hardest metals. The whorl is dished in the centre on the upper side giving this design extra rim weighting and a long, fast speed spin characteristic. Balance is perfected by one sterling silver pin on the whorl edge. The spindle is polished with a high shine French polish and a final gloss of carnauba wax adds more durability. Dimensions - whorl diameter approx 62 mm, (2.5 in), spindle length overall 250 mm, (10 in), weight 18 grams (about 0.6 oz). All my spindles are tested before despatch. This item accompanied by a free sample of Tasmanian superfine Merino roving as sold in our Etsy shop.
